“You now have a — you now have a forum here at Fox News, OK, that you can immediately neutralize 60 Minutes... (SNAPS HIS FINGERS)… like that.... And again, any time you want to set the record straight, we're here” — Bill O’Reilly to Sarah Palin.
You'll have to excuse me. I'm having a Johnny Foreigner Moment. In Britain if one of our most established journalists said that to a politician they would be out of a job before the sentence had left their mouth. Not only was O Reilly promising not to challenge the statements of a politician, as is his job, he was offering Palin the exact opposite: a place where she could escape those meanies in the press with their bothersome questions. He was offering her
sanctuary. The only way O Reilly could get fired quicker in the UK is if he clambered over his desk, unzipping his fly, and lunged for her. But nobody bats an eyelid here.
That's what Fox news does. This is simply one of those things that I am psycho-geographically predisposed never to understand — like the lack of gun control, or WTF wrestling, or the career of Tom Cruise. It happens.
