America is not a one-party state

Why were Republicans reading from the declaration of Independence on the steps of the capitol building today? They are not objecting to the Democrat's healthcare policies because they are Democratic. They are objecting to them on the grounds that they are un-American. It's an interesting argument, for it follows that the only American party are therefore the Republicans. That's why all political invocations of patriotism are, in my view, suspect: any suggestion that the other party is less patriotic than you tips us inexorably towards one-party rule. The only truly UnAmerican thing is to call someone "Unamerican." That charge has no place in politics.
