The decline of Birtherism?

"The number of Americans saying President Obama was born in another country has been sliced in half, according to a new Washington Post poll... We do not live in a post-factual world. And producing valid proof of contested or queried claims is not pointless. The biggest shift in opinion? Among conservative Republicans. If journalists spent more time getting information rather than preening about which information should be dispersed, we'd have fewer conspiracy theories, not more." — Andrew Sullivan

Not so. All this means is that the number of people who have judged that they can no longer deliver that insult without fear of mockery has gone up, not that the number of people actually believing it has gone down. It was never about belief, merely disrespect.

  1. Aye. The heart and soul of Birtherism was shot in the head on 5/01/11.

  2. Absolutely Tom. It was always about disrespecting a president with a funny name and a pedigree not often found amongst our dumbed-down electorate and sowing that disrespect throughout the land. It was never about belief any more than talking "No taxes" was about creating a healthy economy and jobs...

  3. Absolutely right. He has been dragged down into the muck and the mire. All those around the world who wish to discredit the notion of the "leader of the free world" can rejoice, sit back, and watch his own people tear him limb from limb.

  4. And I haven't noticed any of these sceptical birthers demanding to see Bin Laden's death certificate... the long form version.
